One of the theories is that the pagers and other appliances had a malware virus to cause them to heat up.

  1. From the vid I saw it looked like a bit more than a battery explosion but I wouldn’t discount it either. I thought it resembled a charge goin off as I have watched clips of batteries exploding and the don’t seem to have such a punch usually. They said there was petn in them for a bit but haven’t heard more.

  2. Apparently it was an infected advertising package used in several apps. The app store should be clean or what’s the point of it?

I’m not saying it isn’t possible, but lithium batteries in phones don’t explode, they catch on fire. Even if some virus overclocked the phone and disabled the phone shutting itself down when overheating, a phones processor wouldn’t heat up fast enough to explode. If you have any old phones, throw the battery in a fire pit and see what happens (don’t breath the smoke in)
