Maybe all these liberal nations altering their immigration policies to be more restrictive towards immigration should be a sign to the rest of us. Yes we should welcome immigrants but we shouldn’t do so in a massive & uncontrolled manner. Immigration restrictionism isn’t becoming more popular because people in liberal nations are becoming more xenophobic or falling for right-wing propaganda. It’s because there literally are real-world consequences for letting in so many people. Sweden tried so fucking hard to be pro-immigrant & try to accommodate migrants from the Middle East. But it takes 2 to tango. Many of these immigrants do come from extremely religiously conservative nations & unfortunately their views many times don’t conform to liberal secular values. The integration process failed there & it gave way to rise to the far right. And we’ve seen this in many other European nations. If we don’t want to empower politicians like Trump & MAGA, we have to be pragmatic with our immigration policy.
