In 2016 I was given a (very realistic) fake arrest video by Nevada police. The audio had been intentionally changed to depict events differently. While being prosecuted with this fake evidence, I started my own investigation into what had gone on with that tape. This video has 8 years of findings.

SUBMISSION STATEMENT:

This is a video I made about a fake video I got from Nevada police back in 2016.

I made some videos about this in the past and posted them here. They did ok, but they never really took off. I hope this video has the right ingredients to find a life out there in cyberspace. I hope people will feel the urge to focus on it, to get just a bit obsessed with it, as I did. I learned from making my previous videos that it isn’t enough to prove something like this, you also have to give it meaning. You have to somehow reach through the screen and make people care about this one particular thing. And so the choices made in the creation of this video reflect my attempts to do that.

As for the content of this video, I’m quite proud of it. I pioneered a couple different techniques to think about and analyze fake video evidence. One forensic technique, and one technique that is more abstract, more philosophically oriented. I also found indications of this phenomenon happening to other people besides myself, and I developed a way of behaviorally analyzing the different components of “fake tape scenarios.” What the officers do, what the subjects do, what the editor does. This is stuff that basically no one knows about except for the police editors engaged in the craft.

The topic of how we can trust any information shown to us seems more pertinent now than ever before, and so I hope that sort of aligns this video more with the current zeitgeist. When this all happened to me 8 years ago I think I was just a bit ahead of the curve for most people to truly care about it. For instance, the discussion surrounding the 2020 election really underscores how detailed aspects of our technological reality(and ignorance surrounding those things) basically dictate every facet of our lives.

I’ve created an archive of the main pieces of evidence discussed in the video. It has various documents, videos and so on. You can take a look at this stuff and get that feeling of being an investigator. You can also confirm some of the details I mention in the video. I did remove some content that it previously had in order to anonymize a certain individual.
