What a monumentally stupid decision, the islands where uninhabited prior to European discovery, same as Mauritius was, it never belonged to someone else and was not stolen land, cannot think of a single good reason to hand a highly strategic sovereign base over to an impoverished island ripe for a major Chinese influence operation.

    >The Chagos islanders themselves – some in Mauritius and the Seychelles, but others living in Crawley – do not speak with one voice on the fate of their homeland.

    >Some are determined to return to live on the isolated islands, some are more focused on their rights and status in the UK, while **others argue that the Chagos archipelago’s status should not be resolved by outsiders**.

Do the Chagos Islanders specifically want to be part of Mauritius (which they’ve never been at any point before), or do they just want to be treated better with some compensation/recognition for past wrongs?

If Denmark handed Greenland to Canada without consulting the locals I don’t think it’d be hailed as an anti-colonial victory.

This is what matters. It’s good that the Chagossians are finally seeing a little bit of justice and being able to return to (some of) their homeland.
