That’s awful. The authoritarianism of Cambodia and regional nations appeasing them is tragic.
It does remind me that earlier this year I was driven in an Uber by one of the members of the liberal former opposition party (CNRP) of the Cambodian parliament who was nearly beaten to death in 2015 by government aligned thugs.
He showed me the scars from his surgeries and talked about how he was lobbying the State Department and western nations to put pressure on Cambodia. He was in exile in Thailand for a short time until the Cambodian government convinced them to deport him and he got asylum in the US. His wife and child are still in the SEA region, and at the time hadn’t been allowed to join him here. Harrowing story. Very friendly man.
